“Bridesmaids” is an amusing, women-driven comedy that provides a little bit of improper fun for all sexes. From the storyline to the cast, the film will keep you engaged and laughing throughout the two-hour duration..
Best known for “Saturday Night Live,” Kristen Wiig plays Annie, a woman handling work, love and life problems, who is picked to be her childhood best friend Lillian’s (Maya Rudolph) maid of honor. Annie continuously tries to make Lillian’s wedding experience perfect, but she — often hilariously — fails miserably.@@http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1325419/@@ @@http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0748973/@@
Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive for “Bridesmaids,” and for good reason. The film is a twist on the hilarious films producer Judd Apatow (“The 40 Year Old Virgin,” “Superbad,” “Knocked Up,” “Pineapple Express”) often comes out with — in that the main characters are all women.@@http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0031976/@@
Women everywhere will relate to Annie and the other bridesmaids. You feel for Annie as she struggles to pay for her expenses and continues to see a man who obviously has no interest in her for anything other than sex.
Helen (Rose Byrne) is the typical girl you love to hate. As Lillian’s other best friend, there are often painfully awkward scenes between Helen and Annie as they fight to be recognized for the work they’ve put into the wedding. Melissa McCarthy (“Gilmore Girls,” “Mike and Molly”) plays the masculine Megan, sister of the groom. She provides funny, yet cringe-worthy moments, as her character seems exaggerated.
Also included in the bridal party is Rita (Wendi McLendon-Covey from “Reno 911!”), the previously-slutty-but-now-married woman who fantasizes about sexual adventures and Becca (Ellie Kemper from “The Office”), the inexperienced newlywed who has only ever had sex with her husband.@@http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0126284/@@ @@http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0565250/@@ @@http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1018488/@@ @@http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2608689/@@
The characters may be slightly typical, but each role is perfectly cast.
One of the best parts of the film is the raunchiness of the women. So often movies will have occasional bits of realness, but “Bridesmaids” has it throughout. The women aren’t prissy, and it comes out most in the film’s dialogue.
While the main storyline was the women’s path to the wedding, there was a perfect on-the-side romance story. Annie has her hot sleepover buddy (Jon Hamm) but meets a nice cop, Officer Nathan Rhodes (Irish actor Chris O’Dowd). Annie trying to decide whether to go for the bad boy who doesn’t truly like her or the nice guy she’s never had before is a tense storyline that girls watching can completely appreciate. @@http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0358316/@@ @@http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1483369/@@
The only disappointing part of the film was the lack of partying. While there were some moments, there was an expectation of more of a “Hangover for Women” movie experience. In actuality, there was more drama than there was debauchery. The best scene was on an airplane, when Annie gets fairly wasted and makes fun of Helen and the airline steward and eventually becomes delirious.
Wiig will no doubt be remembered for her performance in “Bridesmaids.” She often speaks with a soft, yet sarcastic, voice that perfectly embodies how it seems she feels about her situation. She is poised and graceful, yet so funny you cry tears of laughter.
Though it’s not a movie you’d go to see with your parents (it can get pretty raunchy at times), it’s a great movie to go see with a group of girl friends. Men will enjoy this film too, as the laughter will be enough to tide them over through a bit of girl drama.
It’s refreshing to see a movie where the characters are real women who look, act and talk realistically. Though the women are in their 30s, the storyline can easily be translated to college students, as change is something pertinent to everyone. It’s a fun, well-produced movie that should be placed on the charts next to “The Hangover” and the like.
‘Bridesmaids’ is a fun, raunchy film that deserves praise
