Arizona
Former Wildcats baseball player and current Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona will be among a class of seven individuals to be inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame, according to an announcement Monday.
Francona played for Arizona from 1978-80, the last season culminating in a national championship. Francona hit .401 in the 1980 season to receive the Golden Spikes Award and the College Player of the Year award from The Sporting News.
Arizona State
The Sun Devils men’s and women’s track and field teams swept the team titles at the Lumberjack Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz., Saturday. The event was hosted by Northern Arizona University.
Arizona State junior David Auberry had a big day in the sprints, winning the 60-meter dash (6.80, altitude adjusted) and 200 meters (21.52).
California
The No. 17 Golden Bears baseball team swept Utah in a doubleheader, 7-0 and 6-5, on Sunday for the first two wins of what will be the final season for the program.
Freshman Andrew Knapp hit a pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 5-5 tie and capture the second game for Cal.
Oregon
The women’s track and field team remains No. 1 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s poll for the indoor season. The Ducks’ lead over second-place LSU increased in the newest poll, released Feb. 15.
Texas, Arkansas and Texas A&M round out the women’s top five.
Oregon did find itself markedly lower in the men’s poll, falling from sixth to 12th. Florida and LSU remain the top two teams in the nation, while Indiana, Texas A&M and Arkansas compose the new top five.
Oregon State
Beavers senior forward El Sara Greer was named Pacific-10 Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday for her performance in Oregon State’s 61-59 win over Oregon in the Civil War.
The Waterloo, Iowa, native had game-highs of 21 points and 13 rebounds and blocked two shots against the Ducks.
Stanford
The No. 1 Cardinal women’s tennis team beat No. 2 Florida, 4-2, to capture the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va., for the program’s first indoor tournament title since 2006.
Stanford (9-0, 0-0 Pac-10) won two of three doubles matches for the doubles point, and sophomore Stacey Tan’s three-set victory over the Gators’ Alex Cercone (7-5, 3-6, 6-4) keyed the match victory for the Cardinal.
UCLA
Sophomore outfielder B.B. Bates went 4 for 5 with two home runs and four RBI as the No. 1 Bruins softball team beat Utah State, 13-3, in six innings at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas.
Senior infielder GiOnna DiSalvatore went 3 for 3 with two RBI as UCLA improved to 9-1 on the season.
USC
The Trojans’ men’s tennis team closed out the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle with a 4-0 shutout of No. 12 Louisville to improve to 8-2 on the season.
No. 2 USC did not lose a set in any of the six singles matches, three of which were played to completion, en route to the team victory. The Trojans won the doubles point by winning two of the three matches.
Washington
Freshman distance runner Chelsea Orr captured the individual gold medal for Team USA in the junior women’s 4,000-meter cross country race at the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at Queen’s Park Savannah in Trinidad on Feb. 20.
Orr, a native of Sammamish, Wash., completed the course in 13:54 for a six-second victory. Team USA earned the silver medal in the NACACAACCC competition.
Washington State
The Cougars baseball team scored three runs in the seventh inning to beat Cal State Bakersfield, 4-3, in the rubber match of a three-game series in Bakersfield, Calif.
Pitcher James Wise earned his first win of the season for Washington State (2-1), allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in 6 1/3 innings.
