The Stanford Cardinal clinched the women’s basketball Pacific-10 Conference regular-season title outright for the 11th consecutive season Saturday afternoon, at Oregon’s expense.
This feat was accomplished while handing the Ducks (13-14, 4-12 Pac-10) their worst defeat of the season by margin of victory, a 99-60 drubbing at Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto, Calif.
No. 2 Stanford (26-2, 17-0) has won 20 consecutive games and 60 consecutive home games, a program record. The Cardinal figures to be a No. 1 seed in the Women’s NCAA Tournament in March.
Freshman Deanna Weaver hit a three-pointer following a turnover by Chiney Ogwumike to open the game with a 3-0 Oregon lead. Two Nnemkadi Ogwumike free throws and a Chiney Ogwumike layup later, the Ducks would never again threaten the lead.
Stanford made 17 of 30 field goals (56.7 percent) in the first half, while Oregon made just seven of 38 attempts (18.4 percent). That deficit allowed the Cardinal a 56-25 lead entering the locker room, and the Ducks could not remain close enough to recover. Stanford’s lead hit 40 points twice over the course of the second half.
The Cardinal had more rebounds, assists, steals and blocks than the Ducks, and shot 45.6 percent from the field for the game despite making just five of 22 three-pointers. Oregon shot 24.4 percent from the field and made eight of 35 three-point attempts.
Jeanette Pohlen had a game-high 20 points, and was one of six Cardinal in double figures on the night. Kayla Pedersen recorded a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double for Stanford.
Kristi Fallin came off the bench to score 10 points; she was the only Duck in double figures for the game.
