Regarding Mark Costigan’s recent article, “Soldier who divulged to WikiLeaks a true American hero,” I take issue with Mr. Costigan’s premise and conclusion. If Pvt. Manning’s mission was to shed light on Americans’ complicity to Iraqi torture and rape, he could have limited his release of documents to these issues. Then, maybe Mr. Costigan’s “hero” designation of Pvt. Manning might hold some water. Manning’s disclosure of documents, however, was not limited to such lofty goals. Instead, his disclosure was done to embarrass the United States and its allies without consideration to content, subject matter or to the fact lives were likely put at risk because of his breach.
Manning is no hero. He is a malcontent who used his position to voice his personal agenda.
