Conservation Group LandWatch Lane County said Lane County is not following its own deadlines for making land use decisions. LandWatch Lane County said it will ask the state to intervene unless the county addresses its concerns. According to the group’s President Robert Emmons, these cases typically end up in Lane County Circuit Court for resolution, which can be time-consuming and expensive for the county.
Oregon Rep. Peter DeFazio suggested the best way to cut the deficit is to continue to do nothing about it. He said that by not renewing Bush’s tax cuts — which will expire in a year unless renewed — Congress will help cut the deficit over time. DeFazio’s announcement comes after the super committee failed in reaching a decision about the budget crisis. The inability of the bipartisan committee to meet its deadline means that the federal government will face about $1.2 trillion in automatic cuts in January 2013, unless Congress can regroup and iron out a compromise.
Eugene city planners say it will not be much longer before they release an updated Envision Eugene plan deciding whether the city will expand its current boundaries to include 34,000 more people by 2030.
The ban the bag movement continues to pick up momentum in Eugene. The movement intends to follow in the footsteps of Portland and many other cities by banning plastic bags at major retail stores. The city council has heard the issue and will be discussing it further in upcoming months.
