Starting Jan. 1, the University administration will gain the talents and skills of Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director of Finance and Administration Jamie Moffitt,@@http://directory.uoregon.edu/telecom/directory.jsp?p=findpeople%2Ffind_results&m=staff&d=person&b=name&s=Jamie+Moffitt@@ who will be making the move to campus in order to fill Frances Dyke’s position as vice president of finance and administration.@@Title in all caps?@@
Moffitt was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She attended Harvard, where she was a student-athlete. She gained her undergraduate degree in economics while also serving as captain of the women’s tennis team. After her first four years of college, she took a year off in which she played on the women’s satellite tennis circuit.
“I had a great time, but I wasn’t necessarily very successful in the terms of making a living out of it,” she chuckled.
After dabbling in professional sports, she returned to Harvard to attain a joint law degree there and masters in law and diplomacy from the prestigious Fletcher School, where she focused on business and finance law.
She then went to work as a strategic consultant for McKinsey & Company, a global management consulting firm.@@http://www.mckinsey.com/About_us@@ At this position, she worked on mergers and acquisitions as well as strategic management planning specializing in post-acquisition practice.
She explained how she witnessed the ups and downs of the technology industry during her brief tenure before moving to Eugene with her husband, who joined the law school faculty in 2001. In Eugene, Moffitt worked as a consultant for various companies around town, eventually landing herself an administrative role at the law school in 2002.
“The law school was looking for someone who could oversee finances, human resources and information technology, and I thought that it was a great position for me,” she said.
She served at this position for several years before making the jump to athletics in May of 2010. As an associate athletic director for finance and administration, her work involves managing the daily operations, overseeing the budgeting and accounting for the whole department. Currently, the athletics operating budget is $80 million.
Her list of responsibilities is extensive, including the management of personnel and general administration of the athletic department.
“There’s definitely a positive energy around the athletic department,” she said, “but the workload is around the clock. I now appreciate how much work it takes to put on a football game and host 55,000 people.”
Although many of her duties were the same from her previous position in the law school, she had to work hard to make her transition into the new position as smooth as possible.
Now Moffitt is switching to another position in order to fill Frances Dyke’s role when she leaves at the end of this year.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time here both at athletics and the law school,” she said, “I think there’s great work going on throughout the University.”
Her responsibilities will be similar to that of her previous two positions but with a broader scope encompassing the operations of the entire University.
“Jamie has a wonderful background and a very broad perspective,” said Frances Dyke, current VP for finance and administration. “She has the talent to take the portfolio to the next level. The University is lucky to have her.”
