Splinters Fine Woodworking Group has carved its way into Eugene’s art scene. A collective consisting of seventeen members, Splinters makes all types of furniture, art pieces, and even light fixtures from oaks, furs, old doors, and even baseball bats.
The gallery Splinters took over was lined with tables, each laboring under their beautiful merchandise. One table was made from 100-year-old Douglas fir that was reclaimed from the Springfield mill race. It had a green tint to it that came from all of the minerals the wood had soaked in over the years, it was very clean lined, and polished to perfection.
There were other pieces that were not fully wood, like that of a Yin-Yang inspired table with rocks inlayed in to the surface or thetable with a bowling ball and bowling pins set in the surface. The bowling ball was actually set in the part of the door that would have once been the window with a large spiral drill bit that allowed it to be spun. The bowling pins were the legs as well as sawn in half and inlayed in the surface as well.
Another theme for some of the pieces was golfing. For these pieces, the craftsman had taken old wooden and metal golf clubs, which were then attached to a back board, and made a hat or coat rack for your house. Above the gallery hung impressively beautiful lighting fixtures. The artist had made them using a thick construction paper, which had a faint brown tint and small twisting pieces of wood lining. Said Clay DeForge, a member of Splinters, “Our emphasis is quality home furnishings.”
Splinters Fine Woodworking Group will be displaying their wares at 881 Willamette Street until October 7, 2011. They will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 7 pm.
