Tyrel Love
Age: 19
Major: Undeclared
Hometown: Bend, Ore.
Year: Sophomore
Emerald: What is a summary of your platform?
Love: I just want to represent the student body the best that I can, of course. And I want to look for the little things that make a difference in everyday school life, and, of course the big stuff, like lower tuition, more student say in what goes on in the day-to-day activities of the University.
Emerald: What kind of day-to-day activities?
Love: Well, like deciding, I guess for example would be like registering for classes, how, like I heard that they’re going to abolish the fee for dropping classes … stuff like that, like what students would prefer …
Emerald: What qualifies you for the position?
Love: Well, I’ve always taken learning seriously, and I’m pretty hard working, listen to people and I think I’d be good for this position.
Emerald: Do you have any organizational or other experience that qualifies you for the job?
Love: I can’t think of anything right now. I can’t really think of anything. It’s my first real experience with running for government.
Emerald: Why do you want the job?
Love: Well, like I said, I’ve never really done anything like this before and I just thought it’d be kind of cool to get involved and just see what it’s all about. I think it’d be cool to have a little bit of say, making rules and deciding how the money is spent.
Emerald: In light of the ASUO retreat to Sunriver, what is the best way to ensure proper accountability from student leaders next year?
Love: What exactly happened. I’m not really sure exactly what happened in Sunriver.
Emerald: I’ll give you the bare facts of what happened. Multiple members of student government from different branches went and later admitted to smoking pot and drinking alcohol on the retreat. I don’t know if you know much about the punishment process, but then they went into a self-punishment process.
Love: OK, well, people know that that’s wrong, but make more of a pure setting that really doesn’t stand that kind of stuff. Kind of try to make an aura of being a leader, instead of just doing what you want to do. Being a leader is more about sacrificing your own fun for the good of everybody else.
Emerald: Should to Senate be dealing with any other issues that it is not currently attending to?
Love: I can’t think of any.
