College Republicans members hope conservative writer and speaker Daniel Flynn will bring a “breath of fresh air” to a campus dominated by an “extreme liberal bias” when he lectures tonight, College Republicans member Anthony Warren said.
Flynn, who wrote “Intellectual Morons: How Ideology Makes Smart People Fall for Stupid Ideas,” published in 2004, will deliver a lecture on his 2002 book, “Why the Left Hates America: Exposing the Lies That Have Obscured Our Nation’s Greatness,” at 8 p.m. in 182 Lillis.
Warren said Flynn “talks a lot about how current leftist liberals in America today, a lot of their policies and a lot of their views … are pretty anti-American.” Warren said hostility against the Bush administration, conservatives and America in general at the University “comes very strongly” from the political science and sociology departments in particular, saying con- servative values are “kept blacklisted in lecture halls.”
“We were just like, wow, that really sounds appropriate, like a perfect fit for this campus atmosphere,” he said.
Warren said he hopes Flynn will draw “any conservative or moderate who is really sick of the extreme liberal slant and bias on this campus.”
Gonzaga University’s College Republicans chapter gained national media attention in 2003 after student government members removed fliers promoting a Flynn presentation because they allegedly contained hate speech, according to the Gonzaga Bulletin. Student leaders later apologized for mistakenly tearing down the group’s posters.
Warren said anyone may attend the event and ask questions. He said he is confident Flynn will be able to defend his ideas.
