The Oregon men’s track and field team received top performances from its relay squads at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa
on Saturday.
Led by the 4×100 relay entry of Richard Del Rincon, Matt Scherer, Kedar Inico and Jordan Kent winning its third consecutive relay crown, the Ducks posted many other solid marks in Drake Stadium.
The 4×100 squad finished first in both the preliminary heat on Friday and the final heat on Saturday, finishing with times of 40.05 seconds and 39.88 seconds, respectively. In Saturday’s final, Oregon finished .2 seconds ahead of Wisconsin and in the process, earned the school’s third-fastest time in the event’s history. For the third consecutive time, the Ducks narrowly missed breaking the school’s 4×100 all-time mark of 39.80, set in 1991.
In the other relay event of the day, the quartet of Scherer, Inico, Travis Anderson and A.K. Ikwuakor recorded a season-best time in the 4×400, 2.09 seconds better than its time at last month’s Pepsi Invitational. In the process, the Ducks finished second behind returning outdoor champion, Baylor.
Earlier in the day, relay team member Ikwuakor posted a personal record time of 13.93 to win the university section of the 110-meter hurdles. The Arvada, Colo., native broke the 14-second mark for the first time in his career.
In the 200, Kent finished second, only .05 seconds behind post-collegian and former Boise State All-American Corey Nelson, who finished with a time of 21.00. Kent’s time of 21.05 was a .01 second-season best and was only .06 seconds off his best from the West Regional in 2003.
In the field events, long and triple jumper Leonidas Watson led the way for the Ducks, finishing second in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump.
