The jacket for “Jay & Silent Bob Do Degrassi” contains the following disclaimer: “Contains coarse and explicit language. In other words, everything you’d expect from a Kevin Smith DVD.” That first sentence is a lie, there is not a single speck of coarse language to be found on “Jay & Silent Bob Do Degrassi.” The last sentence, on the other hand, is true; “Jay & Silent Bob Do Degrassi” is everything that we have come to expect from a Kevin Smith DVD, namely unfunny and uninteresting. Both Smith and Jason Mewes reprise their roles as Silent Bob and Jay, respectively.
“Degrassi” is a Canadian teen soap opera that is centered around Degrassi High. The show has gone through various incarnations since its debut in 1987. “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” the show’s most recent embodiment, is on its fifth season. The show has garnered a cult following because of the mature themes that it deals with, which include sex, drugs and mental illness, among others.
One of the show’s many loyal fans is Kevin Smith, who has been a fan of the series since 1996 when he watched rebroadcast episodes of “Degrassi Junior High” on PBS at the convenience store he worked at in New Jersey.
“Jay & Silent Bob Do Degrassi” features a three-episode story arc that ended the fourth season of “Degrassi: The Next Generation.” In the episodes, Smith and Mewes play themselves, which seems like a strain for both actors.
Smith is at Degrassi High shooting scenes for his newest movie “Jay & Silent Bob Go Canadian, Eh?” There he meets Caitlin Ryan, a reporter who he becomes
romantically involved with. There are plenty of other subplots involving all sorts of over-the-top teenage drama, none of which are remotely interesting. As a whole, the story is about as engrossing as the nutritional information on a Cheerios box.
Humor is noticeably absent from “Jay and Silent Bob Do Degrassi.” Most of the “jokes” are about Canadian pronunciation and customs. None of the “jokes” are funny.
I suppose that if you are a huge “Degrassi” fan then “Jay & Silent Bob Do Degrassi” may be right up your alley. But if you are a Kevin Smith fan, steer clear of “Jay & Silent Bob Do Degrassi.” It is a waste of time and money.
