The Oregon softball team takes another break from Pacific-10 Conference play today as it hosts Hawaii (32-22 overall, 13-7 Western Athletic Conference) in a doubleheader at Howe Field beginning at 2 p.m.
Oregon (22-24 overall, 1-14 Pac-10) is coming off a three-game weekend in Arizona where the Ducks won their first conference game in nearly 13 months over No. 5 Arizona State on Saturday. The Ducks also lost a game to the Sun Devils 11-3 on Sunday and a 6-0 contest against No. 2 Arizona.
The Rainbow Wahine are coming off four games against Portland State during the weekend, where the two teams each won two games. In Oregon’s four games against the Vikings this season, the Ducks are 3-1.
Leading the way offensively for Hawaii is junior shortstop Kate Judd, who is batting .360 overall and .439 in 20 WAC games, including four doubles, five home runs and 10 RBI in those league games. First baseman Stacey Porter leads the team with 14 home runs and 42 RBI and is second on the team with a .342 average.
Oregon will attempt to snap Hawaii senior second baseman Natalie Gonzales’ 10-game hitting streak– during which she is batting .389 (14-for-36) with four runs, a triple, and four RBI.
Oregon’s offense is led by second baseman Alyssa Laux, who connected for a two-run home run that sparked the Ducks four-run sixth inning against Arizona State on Saturday. Laux has raised her average to .349 and is followed by first baseman Andrea Vidlund’s .328 average.
Freshman Mari Lyn Petrick has been coming on strong lately for Oregon, and head coach Brent Rincon has increased her playing time and raised her position in the lineup. In two of Oregon’s three games last weekend, Petrick hit in the fourth slot. She is now hitting .263.
