GRAPHICS EDITOR
The graphics editor is responsible for coordinating both the photo and graphic departments. The graphics editor oversees three graphic designers (including a senior designer), three photographers (including a senior photographer) and two illustrators.
The graphics editor is responsible for expanding the number and quality of visual elements in the newspaper, and will be specifically expected to:
— Assist and advise the editor in chief in the hiring of employees on the graphics desk and in decisions on Emerald visual style and design.
— Ensure the highest level of communication between the news and graphics desks so that as many stories as possible are accompanied by appropriate art.
— Design and paginate pages and training others to do the same.
— Keep track of all graphic/photographic elements in the works, making sure they are finished in time for publication and contain no errors (graphics) or inappropriate images (nudity, obscene gestures, etc.).
— Train graphics desk employees in the proper fulfillment of their duties.
— Help organize larger news projects, such as a series of articles on a subject by one or more writers, a photo essay with an accompanying article, or a major front-page package with photos, graphics and text.
— Assist graphics desk employees in the exercise of their duties, filling in for them as necessary.
— Oversee the use and checkout of photo equipment.
— Attend required staff meetings, calendar meetings twice a week and budget meetings at 4:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday.
— Keep regular office hours.
— Organize desk meetings as necessary.
— Set individual goals each term to improve your journalistic skills.
Requirements: Must be enrolled as a student at the University of Oregon when the position begins. Must be able to work about 30 hours a week.
