PULSE EDITOR
The Pulse editor coordinates a staff of three reporters (one of which is a senior reporter) in covering the entertainment news pertinent to their assigned beats. The Pulse editor will be responsible for Pulse pages on Tuesday and Thursday, and will be specifically expected to:
— Monitor the news daily to keep abreast of issues that need to be covered and see that no pertinent news is missed.
— Work with reporters to generate story ideas.
— Ensure that all sources in the assigned beat areas are regularly (at least once a week) covered.
— Coordinate with the graphics department to ensure as many stories as
possible have a visual element with them by posting photo and graphic tip sheets, and when appropriate, by sending reporters out with a camera.
— Assist reporters in writing and in improving their work.
— Prepare a weekly budget for Tuesday and Thursday Pulse pages and select photos to accompany stories.
— Line edit reporters’ stories prior to publication to identify problems, such as libel, inaccuracy, wordiness or lack of clarity.
— Write a minimum of 15 inches of copy per week (additional writing is
optional).
— Become extremely familiar with the rules of Associated Press and Emerald style.
— Meet daily deadlines and ensure reporters do as well.
— Attend required staff meetings, calendar meetings twice a week and budget meetings at 4:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday.
— Advise the editor in chief on issues in assigned beat areas.
— Keep regular office hours.
— Organize desk meetings at least once a week to discuss story ideas.
— Set individual goals each term to improve your journalistic skills.
Requirements: Must be enrolled as a student at the University of Oregon when the position begins. Must be able to work about 25 hours a week.
