The Duck Classic concluded Sunday with the Oregon men’s tennis team gaining experience as well as victories.
The Ducks hosted Portland and Portland State on the first day of the tournament at the Student Tennis Center and came away with records of 8-4 in singles and 3-1 in doubles play.
Oregon senior Jason Menke, who had four singles wins in the Duck Classic a year ago, led the way for the second year in a row by beating Portland’s top two players.
“Jason was a real bright spot,” head coach Chris Russell said. “He was tested the most and responded well.”
The victories were especially big for Menke because he is originally from Portland.
Sophomore Kyle Halberg also added to the Duck win total by defeating Pilots Peter Miskovic and Lorin Schlecht, 7-6, 7-6 and 6-4, 7-5, respectively. Junior Chris King handled Portland’s Ram Hernandez 6-3, 6-2 and Portland State’s Kapil Desai 6-4, 6-1.
Joining Menke, Halberg and King in sweeping both matches was freshman Arron Spencer, as he took Desai 6-4, 6-0 and Ty Garrison of Portland State 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, King/Spencer teamed up to beat Garrison and Hernandez 8-4 and Halberg/Walker handled Desai/Mark Simpson 8-6. Manuel Kost teamed up with King to defeat Portland’s team of Colby Jaeger/Schlecht.
Also this weekend, three Ducks flew south for some heated competition in Tempe, Ariz. Oded Teig, Thomas Bieri and Sven Swinnen participated in the Thunderbird
Invitational.
In singles, Teig bested Clinton Letcher of Arizona State, 6-2, 6-2, and Bieri defeated Letcher’s fellow Sun Devil, Ryan McBride, 6-3, 6-2. The Devils got their revenge on the Ducks when Casey Woss beat Swinnen, 7-5, 6-2.
In doubles competition, Bieri and Teig took Northern Arizona’s Jeremy Coll/Thibault Schram, 8-2.
The Ducks will be competing next weekend in the Omni Hotels National Indoors in Dallas. The Oregon women’s tennis team will be in San Diego for the USD Tennis Classic.
