Someone forgot to tell Therese Winslow that freshmen are supposed to struggle.
Winslow, a true freshman, fired a 2-under par 71 Monday — putting her in a three-way tie for second place among individuals — after the first round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at the Tacoma Country Club in Tacoma, Wash.
“Therese played a steady round of golf,” Oregon head coach Shannon Rouillard said. “She just played super and is on the verge of some really terrific accomplishments.”
The Ducks found themselves in ninth place after an opening round 312. They finished 20 strokes behind first-day leader Southern California. There are 11 teams in the field.
“If we could have counted another score in the 70s, we would have been in really good shape,” Rouillard said. “The competition in the tournament is definitely greater than in our opener, but I think our team can realistically see themselves competing with this field.”
The tournament runs through Wednesday. The teams will play 18 holes per day.
Men stand in fifth place
With senior co-captains Chris Carnahan and John Ellis leading the way, the Ducks find themselves in fifth place after the first 36 holes of the Club Grove Intercollegiate at Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif.
Carnahan and Ellis both stand at 2-under, one stroke out of the lead. The Ducks carded a 585 over the first two rounds, nine strokes behind tournament leader and host Pepperdine.
“Chris and John had a real nice showing,” Oregon head coach Steve Nosler said. “It is going to be exciting to have both of them competing for the individual title tomorrow, and they’re both capable of winning it.”
The tournament concludes today with 18 holes.
