Oregon Daily Emerald: Could you tell me your name, what year you are in school, and what your major is?
Bethany Larson: I’m Bethany Larson. I’m a freshman and my major is business.
Emerald: Why did you decide to run for this ASUO office?
Larson: I was an ASUO intern for the past two terms and I really enjoy the whole ASUO and I think it’s a really good cause, and I think the senate is a really neat seat, because they have such a unique position with the whole school because they deal with the $9 million worth of incidental fees and where it goes, and I’m in the business school, so.
Emerald: If you are elected to student senate, how will you figure out how to spend the surplus money?
Larson: Based on where it’s needed and where it’s going to do the most good. What clubs, which area of the ASUO it’s going to be used best in, and where it’s going to be best for the students, and where — since it is part of my money — like where I would want it spent as well.
Emerald: How would you determine where it would be best spent?
Larson: Looking at past where it’s been spent. Looking at which clubs and activities are growing and which are being used most by students and which are in high demand. By looking at holes — the Daily Emerald has a lot of information on student voices.
Emerald: If you are elected to student senate, how will you interact with student groups?
Larson: Just trying to be fair and equal to each student group, and seeing all of them equal and not using my own personal experiences to favor one or the other.
Emerald: If you are elected, what are the most important issues facing the students you would represent?
Larson: I think the most important issues for the business school are just increasing knowledge and just awareness of the business school, as well as like the programs within the business school, like the honors clubs and the programs within the business school that are helping to students to increase their knowledge, like all the free tutoring and what not, and all the other programs on campus that are used for tutoring, I think are being under-represented with the incidental fees.
Emerald: What’s the most important part of section 5 of the student senate rules and why?
Larson: Could you tell me what section 5 is?
Emerald: Sure, it lists the senators’ duties.
Larson: I really don’t know.
Emerald: Have you looked through the senate rule book very much?
Larson: I haven’t yet.
