In Friday’s Oregon Classic, the Oregon wrestling team (3-4 overall, 2-0 Pacific-10 Conference) beat Cal State-Fullerton to stay undefeated in Pac-10 play.
The Ducks lost to No. 12 Central Michigan and No. 17 Wisconsin. Central Michigan beat the Ducks 22-9 in the matchup of the two squads.
Sophomore Shane Webster, ranked No. 8 nationally in the 174 weight class, won all four of his matchups Friday. Webster is now 16-2 on the season.
Seniors Tony Overstake (149 pounds), and Casey Hunt (141) both won three of their four matches.
Oregon hosts Pac-10 opponents Stanford and UC-Davis Friday at McArthur Court.
Coach’s status with 49ers unclear
TAMPA, Fla. (KRT) — Steve Mariucci made his debut as coach of the San Francisco 49ers in 1997 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — and lost.
He may exit as coach of the 49ers with another loss to the same Buccaneers. The 31-6 drubbing his 49ers took Sunday in Tampa didn’t help his chances.
Mariucci has compiled a fine, 58-39, regular-season record with the 49ers, but his inability to reach the NFC championship game since that first season has created some uncertainty over his future.
This is a franchise that expects to do better. It won five Super Bowl titles under the previous two coaches.
Mariucci has one year and $2.2 million remaining on his current contract with the 49ers, but the inability to negotiate an extension last summer has fueled the talk of unhappiness within the organization.
