For new transplants to the Eugene area who can’t find a decent radio station,
the Oregon Daily Emerald has come to the rescue. The following is a guide to
every FM station that transmits a signal to Eugene.
KWVA 88.1
KWVA, the University of Oregon campus radio station, plays pretty much everything
that mainstream radio doesn’t — obscure, local, unknown or virulently
political music and talk shows dealing with issues the mainstream media can’t
or won’t touch. It is owned and operated by students, although members
of the community can volunteer as DJs.
KQFE 88.9
KQFE is a Christian radio station based out of Springfield that plays Christian
music and Bible readings, with news and discussion from a Christian perspective.
The station is owned by Family Stations, Inc., a non-profit corporation supported
entirely by listeners whose main purpose is to spread the Christian gospel.
KLCC 89.7
KLCC is the local National Public Radio affiliate. It is a public radio station
whose goals are to expose listeners to music unheard
elsewhere on commercial radio and present both local and national news in an
unbiased manner.
“We are trying to present some of this country’s great music that
commercial radio does not play,” Music Director Michael Canning said. Genres
include jazz, Celtic, folk, world and reggae music. The license is owned by
Lane Community College and the station is located on the LCC campus.
KWAX 91.1
KWAX is a classical radio station that plays classical masterpieces, chamber
music and choral renditions of classical vocal arrangements twenty-four hours
a day. It is owned and operated by the University of Oregon and supported by
contributions from businesses and listeners.
KRVM 91.9
KRVM is an adult contemporary station that plays a variety of musical styles
including rock, swing, Celtic, bluegrass, folk and other diverse sounds, as
well as educational programming. KRVM is licensed to and owned by Lane County’s
largest school district, School District 4J. The station is supported by underwriters,
listener donations and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
KKNU 93.1
KKNU is a modern country station based out of Corvallis, featuring popular country
music. While the station generally targets an older audience, it also has a
following of younger country fans. The station is run by McKenzie River Broadcasting,
a privately owned local company.
KMGE 94.5
KMGE, or Magic 94, is an adult contemporary station that plays music often heard
in the reception area of doctor’s offices. Their slogan: “Today’s
hits and yesterday’s favorites.” Monica, Bryan Adams and Mariah Carey
are a few of the artists mentioned on the KMGE Web site. Magic 94 is a McKenzie
River Broadcasting station.
KUJZ 95.3
KUJZ, otherwise known as “The Moose,” is a country station based out
of Creswell. KUJZ plays a variety of new, popular country and old favorites.
Cumulus Broadcasting, Inc., a national media conglomerate, owns the station.
KZEL 96.1
KZEL is a classic rock station that plays, as its slogan proudly declares, “classic
rock that really rocks.” Artists such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Credence
Clearwater and Cream get frequent airplay on KZEL. It is owned by Cumulus Broadcasting,
Inc.
KNRQ 97.9
KNRQ is one of two Eugene rock stations. It plays almost all of the same bands
as KFLY, except with less butt-rock and Metallica and more “indie”
bands that got famous and are now acceptable for mainstream radio. It is owned
by Cumulus Broadcasting, Inc.
KODZ 99.1
KODZ, or KOOL 99.1, is an oldies station that plays music from the sixties and
seventies as well as oldies no longer played on other classic rock stations.
KODZ is based out of Eugene and owned by Clear Channel.
KRKT 99.9
KRKT is a contemporary country station from Corvallis. It targets an older audience,
although “the station has a terrific listenership from ages 12-24,”
Sales Manager Larry Rogerssaid. It is owned by Clear Channel.
KFLY 101.5
KFLY is a hard rock station that plays mainstream rock music with a little bit
of hard rock and butt rawk thrown into the mix. This is the station for hair
band and Metallica fans. It is owned by Clear Channel.
KEHX 102.3
KEHX, or Star 102.3, is an adult contemporary station that promises “real
music variety” in its slogan. Sugar Ray, Usher, Alanis Morissette and Third
Eye Blind are a few of the artists played on Star 102.3. It is also owned by
Cumulus Broadcasting, Inc.
KDUK 104.7
KDUK is a top-40 hits station that targets a younger audience. Mainstream hip-hop
and pop music are its main offerings — in other words, nothing MTV won’t
play. The station is based in Eugene and is owned by Clear Channel.
KEUG 105.5
KEUG, or Bob FM, plays a mixture of 80s, 90s, and contemporary hits. General
Sales Manager Dave Wiles called Bob an “eclectic” mix of music, adding
that the station “tends to be popular with younger people.” It is
a McKenzie River Broadcasting station.
KLOO 106.3
KLOO is a Corvallis classic rock station that plays music from the 60s, 70s,
and 80s. “KLOO FM typically profiles adults over 30,
although there’s a terrific following at the college,” station Sales
Manager Larry Rogers said. “It probably would have a bigger following
with the University of Oregon class.” It is also owned by Clear Channel.
