Many Americans worry that their limited funds won’t cover the expenses of gifts for friends and family during the holiday season. However, some Americans are worried about more serious issues, such as paying rent or putting food on the table.
Students will find many opportunities to donate to local or
national charity organizations this season.
That hand-knit Christmas sweater from grandma can be donated to a Eugene or Springfield Goodwill store. Donations help make use of something that would otherwise be returned, thrown away or stuffed in the back of a closet.
For those students leaving Eugene for winter break, there are national holiday charity organizations that provide opportunities to help disadvantaged members of other communities.
Make-A-Wish Foundation International welcomes volunteers, particularly during the holiday season, and aims to bring cheer to children around the world who are living with life-threatening illnesses.
Just Give is another national charity organization providing gift wish lists on its Web site. Donations support groups such as battered women’s shelters or individual families who cannot afford the expenses of the holiday season.
In order to avoid holiday scams, make a check out to the full name of the charity instead of donating cash. When donating clothing, food or other goods, first verify that the charity is accepting such items, as needs will change.
