To keep your gameplay comfortable and your progress on track, you’ll always need a solid stash of WoW gold. Sometimes, though, your main character alone just can’t generate enough income to keep up with all the expenses. That’s where alts come into play!
In this article, we’ll guide you through setting up your very own alt army and using it to make tons of gold in WoW. Leveling up alts does take some initial investment, but don’t worry — you can always find cheap WoW gold for sale and get any amount you need, fast and hassle-free.
And with that in mind, let’s dive into how you can actually turn your alts into a powerful gold-making machine.
Setting Up Your Alt Army
Starting an alt army is as straightforward as it gets: just create new characters and max them out. The leveling process itself is also very simple and basically boils down to gaining XP. However, there are a few tricks that can give you significant boosts and speed up the grind.
XP Buffs
The first thing you’ll want to use is the Draught of Ten Lands potion, which grants a 10% XP buff. While it only works up to level 49 and has a temporary effect, it’s still a handy boost for early leveling.
Next up is the Darkmoon Faire buff, Whee!, which increases XP gains by 10%. You can get it by taking a ride at the Darkmoon Faire. The Faire is a monthly event, and the next one kicks off in early December, so make sure to grab the buff as soon as you can.
Speaking of events, WoW’s Anniversary is now live, offering a passive 10% XP bonus throughout the celebration, along with an additional +10% XP buff for 12 hours from completing the daily quest Celebrate Good Times. This year’s Anniversary Event runs until January 6, 2025, making it the perfect time to level up your alts. If you’re reading this guide after the Anniversary has ended, don’t worry! Many other events, like Hallow’s End or Midsummer Fire Festival, also offer XP bonuses, so if you time your alt leveling right, you can still get those extra gains.
Another excellent option is Warband Mentored Leveling. This system grants you up to 25% increased XP, with 5% per maxed-out character on your account, up to five stacks.
Players looking for a bit of extra challenge can also enable War Mode. This will allow you to engage in world PvP with the opposing faction and also earn an extra 10-20% XP, depending on your faction’s population balance.
And lastly, you can combine all these XP buffs with Timewalking Dungeon Events that let you run dungeons from past expansions and earn bonus XP for completions.
Leveling Methods
When it comes to leveling activities, the choice is entirely yours. Many players prefer dungeon spamming, which is super fast and offers a ton of valuable loot along the way. However, if group content isn’t your thing, questing is a perfectly viable option too. We recommend leveling in Draenor or Legion, as both zones have simple questlines that are quick to complete and rich in XP rewards.
Now that you know how to efficiently level up your alts, let’s move on to the fun part: using your army to rake in gold!
Raiding
Some WoW raids can be run for rewards only once per week per character. By having multiple characters, you can bypass these weekly lockouts, do more runs, and collect more loot that can then be sold for gold.
Take Siege of Orgrimmar, for example. If you have ten alts, you can run the raid ten times a week, multiplying your loot gains by ten. One of the raid’s drops, the Blackfuse Bombling battle pet, sells for 10,000-20,000 gold on the Auction House, so you can imagine how big of a boost those alts can make.
Alts are also fantastic for doing your Lamented Crusader’s gear farms but you must be ready to put in some serious work. First, you’ll have to unlock several Naxxramas achievements, then farm Death’s Bargaining Chips to purchase Dented Raider’s items from a special vendor and finally open them to have a chance at getting those coveted Lamented pieces. The drop rates are extremely low, and this grind is entirely RNG-based, which makes alts so valuable. The more characters you dedicate to farming, the better chances you have to snag that gear. And the payoff is well worth it: Lamented equipment is highly sought after and can sell for 1-2 million gold at the Auction House, depending on your realm.
Heroic Dungeons
Much like raids, Heroic dungeons also have loot lockouts but for daily runs. With alts, you can easily ignore these restrictions and do multiple runs per day to rake in that extra loot for extra income.
For example, we have the Mojo battle pet, which drops from the Zul’Aman dungeon and has excellent resale value on the Auction House. In Zul’Gurub, you can gather plenty of valuable materials to sell, and Upper Blackrock Spire offers a chance to loot the Lanticore Spawnling pet, which can also fetch a high price. And let’s not forget that dungeons are always a good source of gear upgrades. Even if you don’t sell everything you loot, some pieces can be pretty useful for your own characters.
Camping
Spawn camping is a very popular practice in WoW. The idea is to park your alt at specific spawn points for rare mobs and then log in occasionally to kill the mob and get the loot. It’s very simple and effective as your character is already in the needed spot and you won’t have to waste time on traveling. With multiple alts, you can camp at different locations and farm a variety of rare mobs or focus on farming the same one across several characters.
Daily and Weekly Activities
Using alts to run daily and weekly activities is another excellent way to build up your gold reserves. Dailies and Weeklies are quick to complete, often require minimal effort, and can reward you with everything from raw gold (from World Quests, for example) to valuable items and crafting materials that sell well on the Auction House. As usual, more alts mean more rewards and more gold.
Professions
This is one of the biggest reasons alts are so valuable for gold-making. Each character can only have two primary professions, but with an army of alts, this limitation just goes away and you can make the most of all professions in the game. We highly recommend doing just that — set up your alt army so you’ve got access to every single profession. This way, if a particular craft suddenly becomes profitable, you’ll already have a character ready to provide. Plus, with this setup, you can cover more specs and tap into a variety of markets.
It’s also a good idea to have multiple alts specializing in highly profitable crafting professions, like Alchemy, to work around daily profession cooldowns and supply more items for sale.
