Ducks Take the Win in a Photo Finish! There’s Still Time to Donate for Giving Tuesday
EUGENE, Ore. — After a thrilling week of rivalry, the Student Media Showdown has come to a close, and The Daily Emerald is proud to announce victory. When the feathers and fur settled and all donations were tallied, the Ducks won with $6,393 raised! The competition was neck and neck to the very end, with the UW Daily finishing just behind at $6,104.
The Emerald extends our congratulations to the entire UW Daily team and all of their supporters. This was a hard-fought, friendly rivalry, and both sides brought their best to support student journalism — a cause that’s more important than ever.
Together, we raised a combined total of $12,497 to support independent student journalism. This is a win for all of us — students, alumni, readers, and supporters of the press. It takes communities like ours to keep the future of journalism alive and thriving. We are tremendously grateful for all of you.
Today is Giving Tuesday—a perfect chance for anyone who missed out on the Showdown to still make an impact. Both The Daily Emerald and The UW Daily are still accepting donations to support student journalists and the vital work they do.
Join us in celebrating this incredible effort and continuing the support that keeps student voices heard.

Eugene, OR and Seattle, WA — Nov. 20, 2024 — The University of Oregon’s Daily Emerald and The Daily of the University of Washington are taking their storied rivalry beyond the football field. From Nov. 20 until the kickoff of the Nov. 30 Oregon vs. Washington game, these student-run newspapers will engage in the Student Media Showdown, a spirited competition to see which publication can rally the most support for student journalism.
As the Ducks and Huskies prepare for their on-field showdown, the Daily Emerald and The Daily use good-natured banter to engage their communities and encourage donations to their nonprofit newsrooms.
Both newspapers publish news online daily and in newsletters. The Daily Emerald is published in print weekly. Both organizations are student-run. Community contributions are vital to their operations.
“College media plays a crucial role in keeping our campus communities informed and engaged,” said Eric Henry, publisher of the Daily Emerald. “This challenge is a fun way to tap into our rivalry while highlighting the importance of supporting student journalism.”
Funds raised during the challenge will directly support the mission of student journalism, enabling these publications to continue covering key issues, celebrating campus life, and providing hands-on experience for aspiring journalists.
“Our rivalry has always been about more than just sports,” added Diana Kramer, publisher of The Daily. “This challenge underscores our shared commitment to fostering a vibrant, independent press that serves our universities and communities. It also helps us support student opportunities for enhanced coverage and training.”
The Student Media Showdown kicks off on Nov. 20 and concludes just before kickoff on Nov. 30. Supporters can track fundraising progress and enjoy special rivalry content on both newspapers’ websites and social media channels.
