The latest numbers from the Oregon Secretary of State show that 10% of voters, or 1,248 people have voted to recall Representative Holvey, while 90%, or 11,390 people have voted to retain him. There have been 12,638 votes so far. 41,761 people are registered to vote in Holvey’s district.
Paul Holvey is a Democrat who represents Oregon House District 8. Holvey is a former labor organizer and was first appointed to the Oregon House of Representatives in January 2004; he was subsequently elected to the seat that same November. Holvey has been reelected every election cycle since.
He currently holds the high-ranking position of Speaker pro tempore of the Oregon House of Representatives and was briefly Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives in 2022, following then-Speaker Tina Kotek’s resignation to run for governor.
The recall was initiated by the United Food and Commercial Workers local 555 labor union. The union is dissatisfied that Holvey opposed HB 3183, a bill which would have required businesses applying for a cannabis license to promise not to prevent their employees from unionizing.
Holvey says that supporting the bill would have been irresponsible, risky, and potentially costly for Oregon because it conflicted with federal law.
If Holvey’s recall is successful, Democratic precinct committee persons in District 8 would propose three to five replacements to the Lane County Commissioners to fill Holvey’s seat.
District 8 includes much of Eugene and all of the University of Oregon and extends south, stopping just shy of Cottage Grove.
