The late EMU’s basement café, The Buzz, a venue for stand-up comedy, slam poetry and open-mic nights, closed its doors near the end of the winter 2015 term after 15 years in business. It has since been supplanted by corporate coffee overlord Starbucks, which opened on Monday, Sept. 21 in the EMU’s Fishbowl.
Likewise, another new coffee shop will open in winter 2016 in the Science Library on the lower level of the Onyx Bridge.
While the state of coffee on campus is in flux, some spots still remain consistent. Below is a comprehensive guide of the coffee shops on campus. Although the prices are uniform at the four campus coffee shops, there are some perks to each.
Note to incoming freshmen: you cannot use your campus dorm points at any café (except for those based in residence halls).
Prices at campus coffee shops are as follows, unless otherwise noted:
Coffee (Allan Bros., fair trade, 12 oz.) = $1.75
Latte = $2.95
Cappuccino = $2.75
A&AA Hearth
Location: Lawrence Hall, 2nd floor
Hours: M-Th: 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.; F: 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.; closed Sat. and Sun.
The best part about this café: The nicest study spot. Wooden stirrers and straws are kept behind the counter, supposedly because architecture students kept taking them to construct models.
Daily Grind
Location: Basement floor of the Knight Library
Hours: M-Th: 8 a.m.-9 p.m.; F: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.; closed Sat.; Sun. noon-9 p.m.
The best part: Cafe with closest proximity to the library.
The Education Station coffee shop
Location: College of Education
Hours: M-Th: 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.; F: 8 a.m.- 3 p.m.; closed Sat. and Sun.
The best part: The only place on campus that sells Brew Dr. Kombucha and Columbia Gorge smoothies cheaper than Market of Choice.
Lillis Café
Location: Lillis Business Complex, 1st floor
Hours: M-Th: 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m.; F: 7:30 a.m.-3:30p.m.; closed Sat. & Sun.
The best part: Most efficient café. Fully staffed with five baristas at once, so you can get your drink quicker.
For the residence hall coffee spots, prices are as follows:
Coffee (16 oz.): $1.95/1 point
Latte (12 oz.): 2.95/2 points
Cappuccino (12 oz.): 2.75/2 points
Fresh Marketcafé
Location: Global Scholars Hall
Hours: M-F 7 a.m.- 10 p.m.; Sat.-Sun 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
The best part: 20 varieties of loose leaf tea, as well as vegan and gluten-free food options and baked goods including salted caramel tarts, blueberry bread and banana cake.
DUX Bistro
Location: Living Learning Center North
Hours: M-F 7 a.m.- 11 p.m.; Sat.-Sun 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
The best part: Super Duck smoothie (kale, spinach, agave, orange juice, and an apple) costs $3.75/3 points.
Common Grounds
Location: Hamilton Hall
Hours: M-F 7 a.m.- 2 a.m.; Sat.-Sun 10 a.m.-2p.m.
The best part: Starting Thursday, Sept. 24, it’s open until 2 a.m., making it the latest place open on campus.
Puddles Café
Location: Barnhart Hall
Fall hours: M-F: 7 a.m. – 10 p.m.
The best part: Milkshakes – cookie dough, chocolate chip mint and strawberry.
Camp 13 Beanery (AKA the Jaqua Café)
Coffee: $1.75 (Stumptown, 16 oz)
Latte: $2.75
Cappuccino: $2.75
Location: John E. Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes
Hours: M-F: 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
The best part: The only campus café that serves Stumptown cold brew on tap (25 cents an ounce), dispensed with nitrogen for a foamy brew. Also, it’s the only one that uses linguine sticks for drink stirrers. Try the toasted, marshmallow-flavored Torani syrup in the mocha for a s’mores-flavored beverage.
Marché Museum Café
House coffee (12 oz.): $1.75
Latte: $3.50
Cappuccino: $3.50
Location: Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art
Hours: M-F 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.; W: 8:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Sat. – Sun.: 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
The best part: Outdoor patio seating, plus baked goods delivered from Eugene-based artisan bakery, Marché.
