Hill Walker, co-director of the University of Oregon’s Institute on Violence and Destructive Behavior, is the inaugural recipient of the Kauffman-Hallahan Distinguished Researcher Award for 2012. Walker specializes in studying and addressing behavioral issues in public education. The award is newly established by the Council for Exceptional Children‘s Division of Research. He will formally receive the award during the organization’s annual convention this April in Denver.
Over 70 students were arrested in Sacramento, California on Monday after protesting to end higher education cuts and support the passage of a proposed “millionaires tax.” Hundreds of students from campuses around the state had taken over the capitol, and by 6 p.m. the capitol was shut down. The protesters were ordered to desist and disperse at 6:20 p.m. An hour later, California Highway Patrol officers present began to make arrests, mostly for trespassing and resisting arrest. In a survey done by news website Inside Higher Ed, it was found that about 7 in 10 college and university presidents believe that the past year’s sports scandals have damaged all of higher education and that institutions spend way too much on intercollegiate athletics. Roughly two-thirds of public and private college presidents say they plan to vote for President Obama in November, and only 1 in 10 believe the Republican candidates for the presidency have laid out a helpful vision for higher education.
