No. 17 Oregon shut out West Virginia 12-0, but then fell 3-2 to No. 22 Oklahoma on Saturday in the NIKE Collegiate Showcase at PK Park.
In the first game of the day, sophomore pitcher Jeff Gold threw an eight-inning, four-hit complete game (the coaches agreed to a shortened game) to lead Oregon (11-3) to an easy win over the Mountaineers (6-9).
Several Ducks had strong offensive performances in support of Gold. Designated hitter Ryan Hambright hit a grand slam in the fourth inning and catcher Aaron Jones added a grand slam in the eighth inning to help drive Oregon’s 15-hit effort.
Gold picked up his third win of the season, and West Virginia pitcher Pen Nakazato was tagged with the loss.
Oregon’s offense wasn’t nearly as potent in the nightcap. Oklahoma (11-4) pitcher Jonathan Gray struck out 10 Ducks and allowed two runs in seven innings to earn his second win of the season, while Duck starter Jake Reed was tagged with his first loss. Oregon cut a 3-1 deficit to 3-2 with a run in the eighth, but stranded the potential tying run on third base in both the eighth and ninth innings as Oklahoma closer Jordan John earned this third save of the season.
Oregon will face Connecticut at 3 p.m. tomorrow in the weekend finale.
