Usually when I think of a humor book, I think of comic genius in literary form. Similarly, when I think of comedy, I expect to laugh (at least once). While this may be an unfair expectation to have going into reading a humor book, it’s an assumption that’s often made by most readers.
“Tastes Like Human: The Shark Guys’ Book of Bitingly Funny Lists” is your standard, coffee-table piece of “literature.” I say this not because it’s a book to be overlooked; it’s just an easy read. It’s perfect for a late-night read-around between roommates or just a casual read for any bored person looking for a pick-me-up.@@http://www.amazon.com/Tastes-Like-Human-Bitingly-ebook/dp/B0072X0E4K@@
Noel Boivin and Chris Lombardo, or the “Shark Guys” as they like to be called, have put together a group of lists that poke fun at the strange and quirky facets of society and life. At its core it comes off as brooding and critical. However, the humor, while not laugh-out-loud funny, is strikingly clever.@@http://www.thesharkguys.com/authors/@@
The most amusing (and applicable) of the lists is the section on the Top 10 Easiest College Majors, listing English, journalism and sociology among the easiest. In any good bit of comedy, if you’ve been insulted at least once, the comedian has done his job. Boivin and Lombardo have accomplished that same task. Other notable lists include: Top 10 Useless Professions, 12 Murderers and Star Signs, 15 Public Transit Etiquette Guidelines and Top 15 Reasons Why Sharks Are Better Than Cats (my personal favorite).
“Tastes Like Human” won’t be the most impressive work of literary comedy you will ever read, but it will certainly make for some good, casual, weekday-night amusement. If you like your comedy with a bit of witty sarcasm and dark humor, you will probably enjoy the book more than the average reader. “Tastes Like Human” provides an entertaining read, and it might just put a smile on your face (or maybe even provoke an audible chuckle or two).
