In the process of stopping a man for suspected bike violation Sunday morning, a University of Oregon police officer discovered the man had a stolen bike, stolen bike wheel, bolt cutters, marijuana, heroin and drug paraphernalia. The stop involved two public safety officers and a supervising police sergeant at 3:38 a.m. in front of Anstett Hall.
The bike and the wheel were taken from a bike rack near McClure Hall by Charles Steven Kyvelos, 26, and belonged to different students, according to a UOPD press release. Kyvelos was cited for two counts of second-degree theft, possession of burglary tools, second-degree criminal mischief, second-degree criminal trespass and possession of less than one ounce of marijuana.
Due to Eugene police being unavailable to transport Kyvelos to Land County Jail for felony drug charges, he was cited and released. Evidence found at the scene is now being held by EPD to assist in those felony charges later on.
He also was given a letter of trespass for UO and can now be arrested for returning to the grounds.
Later in the police transition, if UOPD is allowed arms, they will have the ability to transport suspects themselves. They are currently unable to present felony cases in the Lane County Circuit Court.
