Boy saves grandmother from fire
Vernonia, Ore. resident Seth Cutright, 12, rescued his grandmother after their house caught on fire, reports KATU News.
The fire was caused by the lighting of his grandmother’s cigarette, sparking a gas leak which Cutright smelled, moments before it exploded. Both suffered from burns, but are currently recovering.
Neighbors befriend child with brain tumor
Estavan Catalan, a 7-year-old boy from Wilsonville was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, a rare type of brain tumor, reports KGW.
This week, Catalan’s neighbors came to the comfort the boy and his family .
Rubber duckies cover the Willamette
The 25th Great Rotary Duck Race was held on Saturday at Alton Baker Park with more than 70,000 tickets sold for the event, reports KEZI News.
Burnell Ambrose was selected as the “Honorary Papa Duck” of the year for selling more than 5,000 tickets this year.
Highway stretch construction delayed
Construction on a 5.5-mile stretch on the Coast Range crest has been delayed and is six years behind schedule, according to The Register-Guard.
The stretch is replacing the old 10-mile stretch connecting Pioneer Mountain and Eddyville located on Highway 20. The 10-mile stretch is considered dangerous.
Construction has cost overruns of $170 million, making it the state’s most expensive highway project.
Salem’s Statesman Journal final paper
The Statesman Journal’s printing press printed it’s final issue on site Sunday, reported the Statesman Journal.
Fifty-nine people who work in the printing press area will lose their jobs.
The paper’s printing press has been in use since 1972, but newspapers in Salem have been printed locally for 159 years.
The Statesman Journal will now be printed through The Oregonian’s.
