It’s winter in Eugene, and as last week’s monsoon attests, that means rain. And cold. And dark. It’s six more months until June, and winter is here for a while.
But the season is no excuse to wear your sweats and ugly sweater around.@@yes@@ It’s still possible in Oregon to be stylish in the winter, no matter what your Californian friends might say. Here are some things to keep in mind as you make your fashion choices.
1. Invest in a sturdy winter coat. Pick one that looks good on you and will keep you warm. You should probably also consider the rain while making this choice. If one isn’t enough, buy several. Choose different colors and have at least one in a hot shade to brighten up your winter months.
2. Boots. They keep your legs warm, your feet dry and are stylish to boot. (See what I did there?) And don’t just buy a normal pair, check out rain boots, too. You’ll get a lot of wear out of them, and you can have fun picking them out: go all one shade or choose a fun pattern.
3. Tights and leggings (I’m looking at you, girls!). There is absolutely no reason to go around bare legged in January. It’s not August, it’s not even March, so why are you dressing like it is?@@thanks, rebecca@@ If it’s 40 degrees, put on some tights for the love of Pete! They instantly add class to any outfit. And there are so many choices to go with here: thermal, patterned, fishnet. Classic black is always chic, but colors can be fun to play with, too. If you still want the bare-leg look, choose nude pantyhose. Keeping your legs covered will not only keep you warm, it will also keep your skin moisturized, and soft legs are always in style.
4. Start a scarf collection. Scarves keep your neck warm and add a pop of color to any outfit. Fairly inexpensive, scarves come in a variety of fabrics, patterns and styles. Keep it light or go for something thick, like a knit.
5. Hats and gloves. Have you ever biked to class in the early morning (or evening) in the winter? Doing so without gloves and a hat is a bad idea: The chilly wind can be unforgiving. Your ears and hands will thank you for the coverup. And hats and gloves are another fun way to accessorize for winter.
6. Layering. Not only can this keep you warm, but you’ll also look stylish if done correctly. Try wearing a sweater over a collared shirt, a hoodie@@no…no hoodies. save those for at home@@ or boyfriend sweater over your normal outfit, or a camisole or undershirt.
