Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy proclaimed Jan. 9 “University of Oregon Appreciation Day” at the Eugene City Council meeting Monday night in light of recent achievements by the University.@@the football team, not the school as a whole, right?@@
Rob Mullens, director of intercollegiate athletics, and Lorraine Davis, acting senior vice president and provost of the University, were in attendance to receive the proclamation. Piercy presented them with flowers while praising the University’s contributions to the community.
“The University brings great pride to Oregonians and alumni everywhere,” Piercy said. “We are aware of the great contributions of faculty and students to society. This celebration makes us all feel very good, especially in the winter months.”
The celebration was centered on the recent Rose Bowl victory by the Ducks; the Rose Bowl trophy and a shiny helmet were on display at the meeting. Piercy mentioned the pride the recent win brought to the City of Eugene, especially because it was the first Oregon victory in the Rose Bowl since 1917.
Piercy also talked about other University contributions to Eugene, including the upcoming hosting of the 2012 Olympic Track and Field Trials, the University’s academic success and the economic and cultural contributions that it makes to the Eugene community.@@blah, blah, blah@@
