With thousands of spectators descending on Eugene for the 2012 Olympic Trials, TrackTown12 and the Lane Transit District’s transportation system hope to make this run more smoothly and will attempt to alleviate traffic around the University.
While there will be no public parking in the vicinity of Hayward Field, free Park and Ride shuttles will take fans from locations on both sides of the Willamette River to Hayward Field.
Additionally, all ticketed fans and credentialed personnel will have no-cost use of EmX and LTD buses, allowing free transportation to Hayward Field for fans not wanting to move their cars. From the Springfield area, fans should take EmX to Agate Station on the eastern edge of the University campus, a few blocks north of Hayward Field.
Fans from Eugene can either take the EmX to Agate Station or take any of the several LTD routes that service University Station, though these stops are on the other end of campus from the field.
Agate Station also serves as the gateway to Alton Baker Park and Pre’s trail for fans wishing to pay homage to the legacy of Steve Prefontaine, or use any of the other running and bike paths along the Willamette and throughout the park.
TrackTown12 is also encouraging spectators to utilize Park and Ride shuttles, which depart from both Autzen Stadium and South Eugene High School at 15-minute intervals. Use of the shuttle is free, as is parking at the shuttle lots. Accessible LTD buses will be available during peak shuttle hours, but the TrackTown12 website notes that the Autzen Stadium shuttle will offer more accessible buses.
Bicycles and skateboards will not be allowed into Hayward Field, and bike parking will be limited to the bicycle racks already on campus.
While it is open to any spectator with a ticket to any session, there will be no official transportation to the Hammer Throw competition at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, but Amtrak does offer relatively low-cost travel to Portland. Fans driving to the event themselves will be able to park free of charge on the Nike campus.
