Oregon’s sophomore middle distance runners Andrew Wheating and Nicole Blood were named Pacific-10 Conference men’s and women’s athletes of the week, the Pac-10 announced on Monday.
Wheating ran the fastest American 1,500 meter race this year in 3 minutes, 38.60 seconds at the Oregon Twilight Meet on Friday. Wheating’s time ranks sixth on Oregon’s all-time 1,500 meter list.
Blood finished third at the Twilight Meet and was the top collegiate runner in the women’s 1,500m. Blood’s time of 4:14.73 is the fourth best mark in Oregon history, leads the Pac-10 and ranks second nationally among NCAA athletes.
Both Blood and Wheating’s times meet the Olympic Trials qualifying ‘A’ standard, assuring both athletes a spot to compete in the upcoming Eugene 08 trials in June.
