Effort to recall Bettman misguided
I am writing in opposition to the misdirected effort to recall City Councilor Bonny Bettman. If the petitioner(s) gets 650 signatures, a special election will be held. This will force Councilor Bettman to spend more time and money running yet another campaign.
Through the years, Bonny Bettman has volunteered her time and energy to the local community. First through various committees and citizen groups, then as city councilor. Unlike many councilors and councilor candidates, her sole interest is to make Eugene a better place. She is one of the best city councilors we have. If you truly care about Eugene as a community, do not sign the petition.

State workers need increased benefits
“Want Food? The EMU food court is open.” Is anyone else offended by the banner hanging outside the EMU? For the last six months, a campus coalition has been working to get a food bank organized for all UO employees. Yes, people working on this campus need food.
Fortunately, the coalition has secured the use of a small food bank at the Newman Center at 1850 Emerald Street near campus. In addition, SEIU/OPEU’s classified staff is currently bargaining with the Oregon University System (OUS), asking for a living wage for its workers and for fully paid health insurance. That’s right, state workers asking for a living wage. Currently SEIU/OPEU has voted to prepare to strike, since OUS has offered no pay increase plus it is not willing to cover increased costs for health insurance, something that our members have never paid for before. If state workers on campus need food now, what would it be like without a cost-of-living increase or having to pay out of pocket for health insurance? I guess before the EMU management wants to put up a sign like that, maybe they need to know their campus community a little better.
Yeah, there are a lot of people that want food all over the world.
