The 27th annual “Cans Movie Festival” will be held all day today at the Regal Valley River Stadium 15 theater at Valley River Center. Admission to any movie is free with a donation of three cans of food, and admission includes a free popcorn. The food will benefit FOOD for Lane County.
Deb McGeorge, a food solicitor for FOOD for Lane County, said the center is in desperate need of donations.
“It’s as bad as it’s ever been,” she said. “Our numbers have declined drastically.”
FOOD for Lane County distributes food to more than 120 agencies and programs in Lane County, and McGeorge said more than 80,000 families benefit from what the organization distributes throughout the year.
The event is part of a nationwide drive sponsored by Regal Cinemas, and the fact that this year it will be held at the new, larger theater excites McGeorge.
“It’s just a wonderful, wonderful company to give up all those movie tickets for one day,” McGeorge said.
FOOD for Lane County especially needs high protein non-perishable items such as rice, any kind of beans, and tuna fish.
For those who are unable to attend this food drive, McGeorge said there are a lot of other events coming up. FOOD for Lane County is also looking for volunteers. To find out more about FOOD for Lane County call (541)343-2822.
“We’re really excited and looking forward to this event,” McGeorge said. “We hope to see everybody there.”
