As a salaried employee, hours will vary, but a sports reporter must be able to an average of 20 hours per week. A sports reporter will cover all sports-related news, both on-campus and off. The sports reporter will specifically be expected to:
- Write a minimum of 45 inches of copy per week
- Write at least one enterprise story per term
- Issue blog posts, Twitter alerts and breaking news stories online as necessary, and ensure that no pertinent news goes unreported
- Work with the sports editor and fellow reporters to generate story ideas and Podcasts
- Ensure, to the best of your ability, that all your writing is accurate, fair, clear and complete
- Work with the sports editor to improve writing
- Become extrememly familiar with the rules of Associated Press and Emerald style
- Ensure that all areas of sports are regularly covered. At the minimum, the sports desk must regularly cover: University intercollegiate athletics, Club Sports and major professional and college sports (in–depth news reporting and event coverage)
- Coordinate with the graphics department to ensure as many stories as possible have a visual element with them by posting photo and graphic tips
- Be prepared to take your own photos, shoot video and record audio to accompany stories whenever necessary, or at the request of a news editor, managing editor or editor in chief
- Finish all writing on deadline
- Keep regular office hours
- Attend required staff meetings and weekly desk meetings
- Monitor the news daily to keep abreast of issues that need to be covered, and and see that no pertinent news is missed
- Set individual goals each term to improve journalistic skills
