Students, graduates and community members flocked to the EMU Ballroom on Friday for the second annual International Career Forum to learn about working overseas.
Keynote speaker Jean-Marc Hachey kicked off the afternoon with a talk on “Global Career Skills: Advice for Anyone Considering Going Abroad to Study, Volunteer, Intern, Teach, Travel or Work!” Panel discussions continued throughout the day about international business, technology, government, nonprofits and non-governmental organizations and journalism.
During the two workshops, Hachey guided the audience through the process of finding and landing an international job. Going off his book, “The BIG Guide to Living and Working Overseas,” Hachey discussed how to narrow down the search for specific jobs and build international resumes.
“There’s a common universal approach to finding an international job,” Hachey said. He discovered the process after his interest in different cultures led him to seek work abroad. Having worked all over the world, Hachey now enjoys helping others figure out how to follow their dreams overseas as well.
A short break between panels and workshops allowed attendees and speakers to mingle, share ideas and ask questions. Downtown Languages, Mobility International USA, USAID and the Study Abroad Program, among others, were represented at the Networking Fair during the break.
Jennifer Dorner, a University graduate, returned to Eugene from Portland for the forum in order to get a fresh start on her search for work abroad. She traveled for 60 days around the world and held a variety of jobs, from teaching English to volunteer firefighting.
The collective efforts of the University Career Center and the Office of International Affairs created this networking and learning opportunity. Career Counselor Dani Amtmann, the forum coordinator, said event organizers decided to hold the forum in winter term rather than fall, and had a better turnout.
