On Nov. 4, Oregon offensive lineman Carson York was named to the ESPN Academic All-District 8 team, with a 3.70 grade-point average as a journalism/advertising major. The redshirt sophomore from Coeur d’Alene, Ida., was a first-team all-Pacific-10 Conference academic selection last season. He’s also a very good football player. York has started eight games for the Ducks this season capable of playing at both tackle and guard. The Emerald caught up with York after practice this week for a quick Q&A:
Oregon Daily Emerald: Since you’re going on the road this week, tell me about hecklers. Which team has best fans in terms of heckling?
Carson York: Tennessee. Tennessee wins by all kinds of margins. I don’t think I can repeat much of what they said, but they were a whole different level. Plus, it was the first time we ever — in the Pac-10, you can’t have a student section right behind the bench, but at Tennessee the student section overlapped with our bench, to where we were sitting. So, there was some Tennessee revelers that were a little obnoxious. They got after our trainers, too.
ODE: Who is the heckling usually directed at?
CY: For some reason, I think I want to throw (Ducks offensive lineman) Nick Cody under the bus. He seems to always get the brunt of the attack. I know (reserve center) Max (Forer) got it really bad at USC. But Nick definitely got the worst at Tennessee.
ODE: Why Nick?
CY: I don’t know. They always pick one and they always lose it on them. Tennessee was Nick. I think that’s the first time they (the opposing fans) have singled anybody out. Most of the Pac-10 teams, we usually have normal fans behind our bench. We don’t have students losing it.
ODE: What’s your hidden talent? Something your teammates and coaches don’t know you do well.
CY: I’m a pretty good snowboarder. I haven’t been able to go since I got here, because first, I’m scared to come back and tell Coach (Kelly) that I got hurt snowboarding. And it’s not as convenient here. Back home I can go to a mountain like 30 minutes, 40 minutes away. But I used to go about 20 times a year back in high school.
ODE: What are your favorite classes that you have taken at UO?
CY: First, I’m an advertising major so I love all my ad classes, mostly because of the professors. But the one class I really enjoyed that no one knows about is actually an accident. I took a Women in Film class. My adviser told me it was a film class that counted for an English credit, and I thought. “Yeah, sure, I’ll do that.” And so I show up on the first day, and I was the only guy in class. It was “Women and Film: A Study of Feminism in the 21st Century” — and I was the only guy in class. It was a little concerning. But throughout the term — sort of embarrassingly, I guess — it was my favorite class here. The professor was really into it.
