The Oregon men’s golf team finished in sixth place overall at the Gifford Collegiate Championship in San Martin, Calif., Wednesday afternoon, concluding the team’s five-tournament fall campaign.
The No. 3 UCLA Bruins took the team title after shooting eight strokes under par on the final day to bring the Bruins’ three-day team score to 1,074. No. 16 Stanford, No. 35 Northwestern, No. 26 Southern California and No. 25 Washington rounded out the top five.
Oregon’s three-day total of 1,105 was good enough for sixth, ahead of No. 24 San Diego and No. 47 Oklahoma, which finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
Duck junior Daniel Miernicki finished second individually, just four strokes behind tournament winner Patrick Cantlay of UCLA. Miernicki improved each round, shooting a 1-over 72 on day one, 1-under 70 the second day, and 2-under 69 during the final round. The junior’s three-stroke improvement moved him up three places in the individual standings on the last day.
Also for Oregon, juniors Andrew Vijarro and Eugene Wong tied for 30th, while senior Jack Dukeminier tied for 38th, senior Sean Maekawa (48th) and junior Robbie Ziegler (67th) rounded out the Oregon finishers.
The Ducks will resume play on Feb. 2 when they travel to Hawaii to take on Hawaii-Manoa at the Waikaloa Kings Course, which officially begins the 2011 spring season.
