In an effort to combat cases of biased and discriminatory acts on campus, the Bias Response Team is kicking off its annual Bias Awareness Week with a variety of events ranging from lectures and discussion to hands-on activities.
Today
Today, the Office of the Dean of Students is hosting a workshop and performance by Kip Fulbeck, an American artist, slam poet and filmmaker who speaks publicly on issues of identity, multi-raciality and pop culture. The workshop and performance will take place in 150 Columbia from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
Wednesday, April 6
Wednesday will kick off with a lecture from Dr. Rosalind Chou, the Samuel DuBois Cook Fellow at Duke University’s Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity and Gender, who will speak about Asian American politics as well as other topics from her book, “The Myth of the Model Minority and Asian American Sexual Politics: The Construction of Race, Gender and Sexuality.” Chou’s lecture will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in the EMU’s Walnut Room.
Thursday, April 7
On Thursday, the Bias Response Team will host an open house from noon to 1:30 p.m. at its office in 161 EMU. Afterward, the Mills International Center and the Bias Response Team will host the University’s annual International Film Series at 6 p.m. in the Mills International Center.
Friday, April 8
To conclude Bias Awareness Week, Rehearsals for Life, the Bias Response Team and the University community will conduct a performance Friday from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the EMU Amphitheater entitled, “What Would YOU Do??” The Bias Response Team will then host a spray painting session from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. that will allow students to artistically express their thoughts.
