Christopher Calder’s rant really belongs in The Shallot.
First off, Lester Brown is not suggesting the Algerian solar plan. He is reporting it.
The idea comes from a meeting in 2009 of several European corporations including Deutsche Bank, Siemens, an Algerian firm and was headed up by Munich Re.
So you have finance, technology, industry and insurance all gathered together to design the proposal.
The Algerian government claims that they can harness enough solar energy in their desert to power the world economy.
They said it. Lester Brown just reported it.
If you want a glimpse of truly “inane cult thinking,” look up the American Petroleum Institute.
Our “representatives” in D.C. provide huge subsidies to oil companies, with major tax breaks at virtually every stage of oil exploration and extraction.
One prime example is British Petroleum. When BP leased the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, 70 percent of the rent was written off in the form of a tax break, which is used only by the oil industry, for a tax deduction of more than $225,000 per day from the day the lease began. The cult of greed. Inane indeed.
