Several current and former Ducks competed in the 50th annual Pacific Continental Bank Open Tennis Championships at the Eugene Swim & Tennis Club over the long weekend.
Oregon freshman Alex Rovello reached the semifinals in the men’s open division for the second year in a row, before falling to fourth-seeded Vicente Joli, a former Boise State player, who lost to Roman Borvanov in the finals.
Rovello’s doubles partner and former Oregon standout Alexander Cornelissen lost to Beaverton’s Brett Joelson in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-4. The duo defeated a pair of Ducks, Jose Izquierdo and Michael Schaeffer, in the opening round, before being eliminated in the quarterfinals.
In the women’s singles finals, top-seeded Suzanne Matzenauer defeated Oregon junior Molly McDevitt in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, to claim the $1,000 prize. Matzenauer never lost more than two games in any of her three singles matches over the weekend. She and teammate Stephen Robinson also claimed the mixed open doubles crown as the No. 3 seed.
Oregon senior Trudie du Toit and junior teammate Julia Metzger won the women’s open doubles draw as they quickly defeated McDevitt and recent UO graduate Siobhan Cavan in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
