It took just a week for Audra Kubat to record the album “Since I Fell in Love with the Music” near her hometown of Detroit, Mich. It was there she developed and honed her skills in the folk music genre early in her life. With obvious influences from fellow folk artists, such as Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake, Kubat uses her voice as a instrument to complement the other instruments featured throughout the compact disc, such as the guitar, flute, violin and piano — all of which Kubat plays herself. She also penned every one of the 11 tracks, which include “Garden” and “Already Gone,” two of the best songs on the CD. Most of the other songs sound similar to each other, with Kubat’s smoky yet smooth croon slurring the majority of the lyrics. It serves as a great CD for background music while cleaning the bathroom or conversing with friends, but it isn’t the best choice to sit down and listen to. The experience borders on boredom when listening straight through.
“Since I Fell in Love with the Music” will be available April 19.
