On Monday, Lynda Hadeen, car passenger Chad Corliss’ aunt, surveys the damage from the Oct. 19, 2001, accident. “It’s all about wearing a seat belt, that’s really what it is,” Hadeen said. The car struck a berm and guardrail and eventually a tree and bridge embuttment off Interstate 5. It was on display near Hamilton and Bean residence hall complexes as a lesson on drinking, driving and using seat belts. A letter posted on the car by Chinese major Nathan Corliss, Chad Corliss’ brother, read, “This is not another ‘drunk driving’ rant. This happened to my brother.”
Shortly after the accident, the car’s driver was life-flighted to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. Chad Corliss, the only passenger in the car, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis to undergo surgery for skull, neck, hand and arm injuries, according to an Oregon State Police report.
