The Women’s Law Forum petitioned the ASUO Student Senate for $884 to send two members to a conference sponsored by the American Bar Association at the end of January. Senate members said they were reluctant to grant the request, however, because the group had only raised $100 and the senate is supposed to be a last resort for funding. Some senate members advocated giving the group half of the money they requested, but after extended debate, the motion failed.
The senate voted to give the Multicultural Center $2,700 from the budget surplus to pay for 15 minority students to attend a workshop. MCC members said the workshop is a valuable investment because the selected participants will create autobiographical stories and then present them to the University community during a public performance.
The ASUO Child Care Subsidy asked that money be transferred from various line items within its budget to help fund regular student pay. The senate voted to move $400 from work study and $1000 from non-traditional student advocate to regular student pay.
PERMIAS requested $400 be released from their food holding account and the senate granted their request after confirming that the planned event would be open to all University students.
The International Student Association made a food special request of $150, a lump sum for the term, and the senate voted to transfer the funds from the Friday socials food holding account.
The senate decided to release $200 from the Native American Student Union’s food holding account so the group can access the funds to prepare for their winter Pow Wow.
The senate also decided to grant SELF’s petition to transfer the funds in their administration budget into their programming budget.
Finally, the senate voted to dismiss the grievance filed on Nov. 19, 2002 against the College Republicans.
