Marcus Mariota has been a busy man lately.
After being named the 80th Heisman Trophy winner on Saturday night, Mariota has since been the center of attention in New York City.
From reenacting what it’s like calling a play from the line of scrimmage with Dan Patrick to doing a top-10 list on the Late Show with David Letterman, Mariota has been the benefactor of the immediate perks that come along with winning college football’s most prestigious award.
You’ve all seen and heard about Mariota’s emotional Heisman award speech by now, so here are links and sounds gathered from the Dan Patrick Show and Late Show with David Letterman.
Dan Patrick Show – Monday morning
Before Mariota sat across Letterman on the Late Show, he first met with Patrick and the Dannettes on their daily radio show.
Mariota, who brought in the Heisman trophy, quickly realized, he had nowhere to hide.
Patrick, who has made a living off asking difficult questions, immediately made a comment about how heavy the Heisman trophy was, questioning if Hawaii’s best could carry the 45-pound hardware. This was all in good fun, of course.
From winning the Heisman to hinting at which NFL team he may play for (if he declares for the draft), here is a snippet from the DP Show:
Patrick: What’s been the best part over the last 24/48 hours for you, aside from winning?
Mariota: Just hanging out with my family in New York. It’s my first time in New York and we went to Central Park yesterday, went to the deli, so it was a lot of fun.
Patrick: Do you wear Oregon stuff/have you ever worn your jersey out in public/would you wear it/it would be funny if you just walked around to see if anybody would actually think Marcus Mariota would wear his jersey walking around New York City.
Mariota: No. No. That would be weird, I don’t know.
Patrick: The speech was great and I thought that the hardest part is when you’re talking about something as personal as it was with your family and what Hawaii means to you. I don’t care how many times you rehearse that speech, you can’t rehearse emotion. How many times did you rehearse it?
Mariota: Quite a few times.
Patrick: In front of the mirror?
Mariota: No, I just read it out loud. I’m not too fond of public speaking, so I was pretty nervous in front of everyone that I had to make a speech.
Patrick: Did you leave out anybody?
Mariota: No, that was the main thing, that was my main goal. I’m sure they heard it or I’ve talk to them over the last couple hours.
Patrick: Most quarterbacks love to talk in front of the media. Is this punishment here?
Mariota: No, because this is a lot more fun than usual.
Patrick: How are you in the huddle?
Mariota: Different than this.
Patrick: What was the signature for you this year? What was the moment you said: ‘that just won me the Heisman trophy?’
Mariota: I don’t know if there is a specific moment, but I think the Pac-12 championship…winning that as a team was special for me.
Patrick: Watching the NFL in Hawaii, got to get up early. What was that like? What time were you watching the NFL?
Mariota: Well, most games kickoff at 1 p.m., so like 8 a.m.
Patrick: You’re favorite quarterback growing up was who?
Mariota: I was a huge Michael Vick fan.
Patrick: You’re favorite team?
Mariota: I grew up a Cowboy fan.
Patrick: Maybe Michael Vick could be your backup for the Jets next year.
