Goalkeeper Maddy Goldberg came up with a big performance despite Oregon women’s soccer’s 2-0 defeat by No. 5 Stanford (14-0-2) on Sunday.
The winless Ducks squad (0-14-2) faced a Cardinal team with championship aspirations without losing a game. The game didn’t end up as dominant as many would expect, thanks to a career-high of 15 saves by Goldberg. She also tied the program record for saves by an Oregon goalkeeper.
Stanford found the back of the net early in the match. In the ninth minute, Oregon turned over the ball on the edge of its defensive third. Jasmine Aikey sent the ball into the bottom right of the goal to give the Cardinal the lead.
The Ducks managed to stay in the game despite facing a much more experienced Stanford team. Goldberg returned in goal after not playing in Oregon’s 8-1 loss to Cal on Thursday. She stepped up big for the Ducks on Sunday.
Goldberg saved seven shot attempts in the first half. One of them came in the 19th minute. The Cardinal sent a rocket toward goal, but Goldberg spiked it away. She was tested often in the first half but her strong performance kept Oregon in the game.
Goldberg continued to come up with save after save in the second half, doubling her total. She kept the game still well within reach. The Ducks had an opportunity to level the score, but couldn’t keep the ball out of their defensive half.
Stanford controlled just about every statistical category. It outshot Oregon by 20 attempts and had 14 more corners. Goldberg’s 15 saves were the main reason the game stayed close.
In the 77th minute, however, the Cardinal finally increased the lead to two. Aikey delivered the corner kick to Kennedy Wesley who was left unattended by the Oregon defense.
The Ducks had their best chances to score in the 85th minute. They got their first three corners of the game, but it was too late to get their offense going.
Oregon returns to Eugene for its last homestand of the season. It’ll face Washington (7-5-4) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
