The School of Journalism and Communication just jumped from one Pulitzer-winning journalist on staff to three.
Journalists and authors Brent Walth and Hector Tobar are joining the journalism school at the UO, Around the O announced Wednesday. Tobar, bestselling author of Deep Down Dark: The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean Mine, and the Miracle That Set Them Free, and Walth, managing editor for Willamette Week, will join current Pulitzer-winner Alex Tizon and the rest of the faculty at the SOJC.
Walth got his Pulitzer Prize in 2001 reporting with others on what was then the Immigration and Naturalization Service. He’s worked for The Oregonian and The Register-Guard in Eugene. Tobar won his Pulitzer in 1992 covering riots in Los Angeles. He has been teaching classes at UO for the past year as a visiting assistant professor.
“The fact that SOJC students will have the opportunity to study with three Pulitizer Prize-winning journalists of the caliber of Brent Walth, Hector Tobar and Alex Tizon is extraordinary,” Julie Newton, interim Edwin L. Artzt Dean and SOJC professor, told Around the O.
