The Oregon women’s tennis defeated visiting Arizona 4-3 on Sunday.
“It’s great to have those matches where it comes down to the wire,” Oregon coach Alison Silverio said. “Both teams obviously were competing and fighting for every point, and it went our way today.”
The two teams headed into the final match tied at three. The deciding match pitted Marlou Kluiving of Oregon and Devin Chypyha of Arizona against each other. Kluiving won the first set in a close match 7-5, and in the second set left her opponent in the dust with a 6-0 win and the final point for the Ducks.
The win was the Ducks first in five matches and improved the No. 67 ranked Duck’s record 9-10 overall and 3-6 Pac-12 play.
Oregon’s success today began when doubles team of Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita defeated the No. 23 ranked doubles team from Arizona to capture the doubles point in the match. The doubles tandem of Kluiving and Nicole Long also brought in a point in with an 8-4 win, which put the Ducks in the lead.
“To see those type of results for the doubles today was a huge momentum swing for us to be able to go up 1-0 going in to singles play,” coach Silverio said.
In singles play Rose and Tobita couldn’t find the same success they had in doubles play and both lost their matches. No. 90 ranked Rose was defeated by No. 54 ranked Lauren Marker from Arizona who won the match 6-2, 6-1, while Tobita lost her match to the No. 83 ranked player in a similar fashion 6-1, 6-3.
Oregon came back and put singles points on the board when Nicole Long won her match for Oregon. The No.123 ranked senior won 6-4, 6-2. Another big win for came in mid-season when she beat the No. 13 ranked player from UCLA Chanelle Van Nguyen, 7-5, 6-1. A close-match win for Sofia Hager brought in another Oregon point 6-4, 7-5.
With one match to go the score was tied at 3-3 when Oregon won the final singles points and the match.
While every point counted today, Coach Silverio was especially proud of the doubles win from freshman Rose and Tobita, which got the ball rolling for the rest of the match.
“They were able to step up in the pressure moments and it was nice to see our freshman step up in a big way today.”
Oregon’s next match will be at Washington on Friday, April 17 at 5 p.m.
