The Pac-12’s debut in the 2015 college football season is one the conference wishes it could forget.
Two nationally-ranked teams suffered awful showings en route to losses against non-ranked teams, while another team entered its matchup a 31-point favorite and lost by seven.
Here’s a breakdown of each conference game:
Thursday (9/3):
UTAH 24 – Michigan 17: In a game that generated more hype about the return of Jim Harbaugh to college football than the match-up itself, the Utah defense was the star shining at the end. Utah intercepted Michigan quarterback Jake Rudock to help offset two missed field goals by kicker Andy Phillips en route to the 24-17 win. Utah quarterback Travis Wilson and running back Devontae Booker each rushed for a touchdown while Justin Thomas returned an interception for a touchdown.
No. 22 ARIZONA 42 – Texas-San Antonio 32: The biggest news coming out of the desert was Arizona’s loss of Scooby Wright III, the reigning Pac-12 defensive player and Heisman candidate, to a knee injury. The injury isn’t expected to be significant, and Wright III is hoping to return to play by the time Pac-12 play begins. Quarterback Anu Solomon threw four touchdowns to four different receivers and Anthony Lopez added a touchdown on an interception. The Wildcats went into the half up one but scored two touchdowns over a 1:30 span to break the game open.
Colorado 20 – HAWAII 28: The most dramatic game of the weekend for the Pac-12 happened when almost no one was watching. Playing in Hawaii at 10 p.m. (PT), Colorado was driving at the end of the game for a potential tie when it failed to get a final play off. After a completion to the eight-yard line, Colorado tossed the football to the official so he could spot it but after a bobble, the ball bounced around and time ran out before the official could spot it again. Michael Adkins ran for two touchdowns for the Buffaloes while former USC quarterback Max Wittek threw for three touchdowns in his Hawaii debut.
Friday (9/4):
OREGON STATE 26 – Weber State 7: Gary Anderson earned the win in his first game as head coach of the Beavers and Oregon State revealed a new offense. Quarterback Seth Collins was solid in his debut, throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for a team-high 152 yards. The Beavers were unable to finish off most drives with a touchdown, as they settled for four field goals en route to the win.
Washington 13 – No. 23 BOISE STATE 16: Washington head coach Chris Peterson almost saw the Huskies come out with the upset in his return to the program. Trailing 16-0 at the half, Washington scored 13 points in the second half but a 46-yard field goal was pushed wide right, and Washington settle for the loss. Freshman quarterback Jake Browning grew more comfortable for Washington as the game went on, going 20-for-34 for 150 yards.
Saturday (9/5):
No. 21 Stanford 6 – NORTHWESTERN 16: Probably the most underwhelming debut of the conference, Stanford failed to score a touchdown and rushed for only 85 yards en route to the 10-point loss. The Cardinal offense failed to get anything going all game long while Northwestern’s offense ran for 225 yards against Stanford’s typically vaunted defense.
Washington State 17 – PORTLAND STATE 24: Entering the game as a 31-point favorite, Washington State was flat out embarrassed in its loss to Portland State. The “air raid” offense failed to get anything going in the rain, as dropped balls and poor route running proved the Cougars’ downfall. Portland State scored the game-winning touchdown with 2:19 remaining to pull off the massive upset.
No. 13 UCLA 34 – Virginia 16: The takeaway from UCLA’s opening victory was the unveiling of star quarterback Josh Rosen. Rosen, a freshman, completed 28-of-35 passes for 351 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions and led the Bruins to the big win. He completed passes to 12 different receivers. With Rosen performing in conjunction with running backs Soso Jamabo and Paul Perkins, UCLA’s offense looks to be in prime form.
CAL 73 – Grambling State 14: Cal quarterback Jared Goff started off his Heisman campaign going 24-for-32 for 308 yards and three touchdowns in an opening game statement. Kenny Lawler had three touchdown catches while Cal returned two interceptions for touchdowns.
No. 15 Arizona State 17 – TEXAS A&M 34: Widely considered one of the Pac-12 favorites to win the conference, Arizona State was overwhelmed by the Aggies defense early and never recovered. Arizona State quarterback Mike Bercovici was sacked six times and threw for just 199 yards on 41 attempts. The Sun Devils trailed 17-14 entering the fourth quarter but were outscored 21-3 over the final quarter.
No. 8 USC 55 – Arkansas State 6: Cody Kessler went 19-for-26 for 236 yards and four touchdowns in leading the Trojans to the big win. Tre Madden added 106 yards and a touchdown on the ground while JuJu Smith-Schuster added four catches for 89 yards and a score.
